Government
In Spartanburg, city and county governments are
integral parts of our dynamic forward-thinking community,
and elected officials are eager to accept the challenges of
helping this area achieve excellence.
Spartanburg
County is governed by a seven-member council with six single
member districts and a Chairman, the Honorable Jeff Horton,
elected at large. The council determines policies and
direction while an appointed County Administrator directs
day-to-day activities. The County is focused on maximizing
the opportunities available to Spartanburg County citizens
and businesses. Current priorities include enhancing
quality-of-life amenities such as improved parks and
recreation facilities, planning for efficient transportation
and other necessary infrastructure and maintaining policies
designed to help our local economy thrive.
The City of Spartanburg is the
county’s largest municipality and often works hand-in-hand
with the county on various projects. The City has operated
under the Council/Manager form of government since 1946.
There is a mayor and six council members who serve four-year
staggered terms. The mayor is elected at large and the
council members represent single member districts. Council
appoints the City Manager, who runs the day-to-day
operations of the City. The Honorable William Barnet, III
currently serves as Spartanburg’s mayor.
Spartanburg County is growing at
an incredible pace. According to the 2000 census figures,
the population stood at 253,791. Within Spartanburg County,
there are 12 municipalities. They include:
Campobello (population 449)
Central Pacolet (population 267)
Chesnee (population 1,003)
Cowpens (population 2,279)
Duncan (population 2,870)
Greer (population 16,843 – located in
both Greenville and Spartanburg counties, this is the total
for both)
Inman (population 1,884)
Landrum (population 2,472)
Lyman (population 659)
Pacolet (population 2,690)
Reidville (population 478)
Spartanburg (population 39,673)
Wellford (population 2,030)
Along with the success in
Spartanburg County, are challenges, and our leaders are
aware of these. But more importantly, they realize that with
this incredible growth the area is experiencing, this is one
of those periods when old solutions may no longer work, and
the day has come to search for new ones.
Spartanburg is very fortunate to
have the renewed sense of partnership and cooperation in
place that will continue making it one of the best and most
admired communities in the region.
